Our Story
If you ask Erika . . .
One thing I have learned through Daniel about myself is continuing to be fearless. I thought I was that girl when I moved to SA with no job and no real plan other than to dance for the Spurs. When the Spurs organization suddenly dismantled the prominent dance team, my heart shattered. And that’s why that was my closing line on my Bumbl profile, “What song shall we dance to?” Daniel has never been shy to dance with me (please help me convince him to do the worm. I heard it was impressive!) and has shown support of my dance dream since bringing me flowers at the SA Spirit showcase to driving to Boerne for the inaugural season for the San Antonio Gunslingers Arena Football Team.
On our first date I remember the first thing I thought was, “I could listen to him talk all day.” Daniel was also the only online date who asked me, “What book are you all reading in class?”, instantly my heart melted. Daniel genuinely wanted to know what mattered most to me and we both had just finished celebrating our 31st birthday. We are now 38 and we haven’t spent a birthday apart since that first date in 2019.
When I decided to go for my master’s, Daniel was beside me the entire journey. When he invited me to my first Salas poker night, he made sure I felt like part of the family. When the universe put us in front of each other again that one August Sunday, I knew I wanted no one else. When he saw me struggling moving from campus to campus, he made sure I kept my head up and reminded me that I am that girl! So when he got on one knee at the Tower of Americas, it was the dreamiest yes I could ever exclaim.
In 2025 we faced the ultimate heartbreak together and no amount of adjectives could describe the strength Daniel displayed for our time at the hospital. I felt like my fairy tale was crumbling, but through our counseling sessions I’ve learned we are still parents, parents of an angel.
